Michael Wentink began dancing at the tender age of 7. Inspired by the film Saturday Night Fever, little did he know that his dream of becoming a world champion would one day come true. In a country where rhythm of music is culturally inherent, it would not be an easy journey given its location and political restraints. Despite these disadvantages, Michael dedicated his life to his passion and love for dance.
At the completion of his education, he joined the air-force where discipline and fitness would play a key role in reaching the top. At 21 he moved to London to stand among the greats of the world, creating an impact with his unique style introducing speed and power to the industry. Michael became world amateur champion with Beata Onefater and became the first South African to win this title for his native country South Africa. After winning all the titles to be won, Michael turned professional and immediately ranked in the top 6 in the professional field, a position he held until retiring from the competition world.
Currently, Michael is working towards sharing his experience and is dedicated towards the upliftment of dance on commercial and international level. He is the head judge of the extremely popular reality TV show STRICTLY COME DANCING (SA version) and judges at the world's most prestigious professional ballroom dance competitions. He is not only a great ambassador for dance due to his discipline and dedication but his track record has shown that '' the dream'' is possible with hard work.
Inspired by glamour and elegance of ballroom dance and the grunge of everyday street wear Michael is now launching his own fashion line. The clothing line ranges from daywear to accessories. “I have always loved the idea of one day designing my own collection and I’m excited at the prospect of making my dream a reality.”
